Local History Day 2009 and Book Launch
Our Local History Day and Book Launch for 2009 saw our book, "The National Coal Board. Owners of Thornley, Ludworth, and Wheatley Hill Collieries 1947-1955", go on sale. It is a publication of 492 pages packed with information, most of it which has never appeared in the public domain before.
We were blessed with a lovely sunny day, and as usual we welcomed many visitors to the Workingmen’s Club. There was a display of seven colliery banners, plus two production banners; the Easington Colliery Band gave two excellent 'sets' of brass band music; and the Durham Constabulary male-voice choir supported with very nostalgic songs.
The event was opened by Alfie Joey of BBC Radio Newcastle. Alfie gave an excellent speech about local history in general and his experiences with one of our books, through which a previously unknown family story came to light.
Of course, the new book was the main attraction and we sold almost 100 books on the first day - a tremendous achievement to all concerned.
